History and Overview

Las Cumbres Community Services, Inc. began in 1970 with a structured program of day habilitation services for developmentally disabled adults residing in Los Alamos. We incorporated in 1971 and expanded services to the Española Valley in 1978 for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In 1980, Las Cumbres became the first private rehabilitation program in New Mexico to earn a three-year accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

The agency added a preschool for children in the Española Valley in 1979 which expanded to serve infants and toddlers in 1982. In that same year, Las Cumbres inaugurated residential supported living services at the Peach House through a cooperative agreement with the Los Alamos group home.

Services for children, adults, and families have continued to expand since then in order to best meet the growing and changing needs of Northern New Mexico.  Our main facilities are in Española, with additional sites in Los Alamos, Santa Fe, Bernalillo, and Taos. Today, the agency is one of the largest social service providers in Northern New Mexico.

Direct services are offered in Rio Arriba, Los Alamos, Santa Fe, Bernalillo and Taos Counties. Community partnerships with agencies at the NM/TX/MX border are integral to work through Las Cumbres’ Immigrant and Refugee Service programs. Education, outreach, and referral activities make a strong impact throughout the state. Our activities reach almost 7,000 individuals each year in four major areas of emphasis:

Values

All Las Cumbres programs are based on a set of beliefs that services should be:

  • consumer driven

  • relationship-based

  • culturally attuned

  • trauma informed

  • community-based and easily accessible

  • inclusive

  • collaborative

  • based on individual strengths and natural supports

Agency Strengths

Las Cumbres serves a very large, rugged and culturally diverse region covering over 10,000 square miles, where most residents live in rural communities that experience challenges accessing specialized health resources.  Poverty, language barriers, geographical distance and poor roads present service delivery challenges.  Las Cumbres has built a strong capacity to provide services to individuals in need from various cultures throughout the area, devoting substantial resources and staff time and often driving many miles to locations where Las Cumbres is the only provider of specialized services for adults with disabilities or children with or at risk for developmental delays. In many areas we are also the only provider of infant and early childhood mental health services.

The agency serves as a regional information and referral resource, and as a center for training and consultation. Our staff answer requests and calls for assistance from city and county government, businesses, schools, provider networks and organizations, churches, individual service providers, as well as from families and individuals seeking specialized services and support.
